Research Group Petrology

Prof. Dr. François Holtz

The main focus of our research group is the investigation of high temperature processes in geosciences and materials sciences.

An important topic is the characterization of magmatic systems with the general aim to understand the formation and differentiation of the continental and oceanic crust.

Research topics

In several projects we explore the distribution of metals between fluids, melts and minerals. These data are important for understanding the formation of ore deposits. In materials science, research is mainly concerned with the physical and chemical properties of glasses and melts.

Laboratories

With its high-pressure systems, which are continuously being developed in the laboratory, the Group has achieved an international reputation in Hanover. These facilities, supplemented by microanalytical methods such as an electron microprobe, are frequently used in the laboratory to simulate processes in magma chambers of volcanoes as well as high-temperature reactions in the Earth's crust.
